up to three months shorter with a ship
The trip from New York City to San Francisco via the Panama Canal is approximately 7,800 miles, while the route through the Strait of Magellan is about 9,600 miles. Therefore, the trip through the Panama Canal is roughly 1,800 miles shorter than the journey through the Strait of Magellan. This significant difference highlights the efficiency of the Panama Canal for maritime travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
The canal made the trip between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans quicker.
It shortened the sea voyage
The purpose of the Panama canal is to connect the Pacific ocean to the Atlantic ocean. Without it ships would have to round South America to make that journey, so the canal saves a lot of time.
The Panama Canal offered a new way to get past the Americas without having to go all the way around the huge land mass. Using the canal saved (and continues to save) a total of about 12,500 km on a trip from New York to San Francisco by sea.
The Panama Canal was predicted to become a strategic center of the most vital importance, and Roosevelt agreed to its creation. The idea of The Panama Canal first came from France, to build the Suez Canal in 1869. In order to get from one place to another people used to go down south on the Atlantic Ocean. Then they would turn and go north, passing Brazil and Ecuador. Finally, they arrive at San Francisco. This trip would take a very long time, so it was decided to make a canal through panama. == ==
The Panama Canal shortened the boat trip between San Francisco and New York.
It is sometimes necessary to move warships from the Pacific to the Atlantic (or from the Atlantic to the Pacific) in order to respond to threats in different locations in the world, and since military conflicts can develop rapidly, it may be necessary to move the warships quickly, and the trip around the southern tip of South America is tremendously longer, and slower, than the trip through the Panama Canal.
America wanted a canal in South America (more specifically, Panama) to make the trip around North America easier. Back then, they used ships as the primary source of transportation, and it was easier to build a canal in Panama then go ALL the way around South America. Basically, it's there because Americans wanted the trip to be easier and less extensive.
Before airplanes the only wat to get through or around north america was to go around it. and everyone knew that, so pirates would hide out and way for a good caring ship to come by. So the U.S. build the Panama Canal not just to avoid pirates but to also shorten the trip for everyone importing goods or cargo. the Canal turned a 45 day trip into a 40 day trip so it wasand has been a intersting accomplishment.
They wanted to build the Panama Canal because it took a very long time to get from the Atlantic to the Pacific, or the other way around. The Panama Canal made it easier for the U.S Navy to gety around
