The Rock River is a tribunary of the Mississippi River. It runs through the states of Illinois, as well as Wisconsin.

Peoria, IL is east of the Mississippi River which serves as the western border of the state of Illnois.
Rivers flow in any direction they choose, constantly shifting and changing course in their search for a lower elevation.
Nearly all rivers west of the Appalacians and east of the Rockies run into the Mississippi, or into some other river that runs into (another river that runs into...) the Mississippi. A couple of examples that do it directly: the Illinois, the Missouri, the Arkansas.

The Minnesota River runs into the Mississippi. So do the Missouri, Illinois, and Ohio Rivers.
