There were dry gullies. Interestingly, after the Persians captured Athens in 480 BCE they smashed all the statues of the gods on the Acropolis in retaliation for the Persian gods burnt over a decade before when the Athenians were part of an expedition which burnt Sardis, the Persian provincial capital in Asia Minor. When the Persians left, the Athenians didn't know what to do with the broken statues, so they buried them in one of the gullies, waiting for the gods to tell them what to do with them. These were discovered in 1926 CE excavations, and shock Horror! they were painted in reds, blues and golds. Purists insisted that Greek statuary was austere natural marble, and that these were a practical joke. However it is quite clear that they were authentic, and like their buildings, the Greeks painted their statuary in gaudy colours.
