The Statue of Liberty was a present to the U.S. from the government of France. It was meant to represent America's allowing of migrants from throughout Europe (Give me your, poor, your tired, your huddled masses etc.) The statue was built in France to the design of Gustave EIFFEL (same guy who designed the Eiffel Tower). It was shipped to America in pieces and reassembled. Back in the 1960's visitors could climb into the head and up the arm with the torch, I don't know if that is still allowed.
