His name was Eugene Williams, a teenager. He was swimming between 26nd and 29th Streets when he was struck by a rock. He was prevented from reaching the shore by the huge crowds of whites and blacks. He held on for as long as he could to a railroad tie, but after some time, he no longer had the strength to hold on. He went under and drowned. Eugene Williams is correct. However it was not during the Civil Rights Movement as we know it today. It was in 1919 during the "Great Migration," which was the period African-Americans came en masse to Chicago and other Northern cities. The murder of Williams sparked a Race Riot on the South Side that left 39 dead and hundreds injured.
