California has several long fault lines. The large fault line closest to the ocean front could cause a large portion of land to "crash" into the Pacific Ocean in the event of an earthquake which registers at least 9 or more on geological equipment. It is more likely that there will not only be land damage but a giant tsunami (such as what happened not to long ago in Asia) will flood the land and cause more damage. The only warning sign the public will receive will be via the media and warning sirens in areas that have them. Sometimes geologists can predict they are expecting an earthquake based on the repeated movements of land in an area. So we do not know exactly when California will experience a catastrophic earthquake that affects hundreds of miles of coastline. This information comes from a California native (since 1958).
