Brigham Young was the religious leader of the Mormons at the time, who regarded him as a prophet receiving direct instruction from God. However, they called the place surrounding Salt Lake City "Deseret", as the Mormons at that time believed that an area near Kansas City, Missouri had been designated as the place where "Zion, the New Jerusalem" would be built. Downtown Salt Lake City is about 20 miles from the nearest shoreline of the Great Salt Lake. (The lake is quite marshy and smelly, you wouldn't want to live closer!)
The people responsible for causing it were the mobs and government in Illinois and Missouri. The person responsible for leading it was Brigham Young. Although the colony was called "Great Salt Lake City", not "New Zion", and it was not on the shore of the Great Salt Lake but about 20 miles south east of the southernmost tip of the lake. Today it is known as Salt Lake City.

The Mormon exodus to Utah officially began on February 4, 1846, although in reality many families stayed in Nauvoo, Illinois later in the year. Almost everyone had left by September to join the others moving west.
