This took place in August 1978- a three-man American team (Ben Abruzzo, Larry Newman and Max Anderson) made the crossing in the high-altitude balloon 'Double Eagle II'. Taking off from Maine on 11th August, they arrived in France six days later. Abruzzo and Anderson had previously attempted the crossing the previous year in 'Double Eagle I', taking off from Marshfield in the state of Massachusetts on 9th September '77. However, they had to ditch in the sea off East Canada three days later after veering off course.
