It was a long held belief that North America could be crossed by a series of rivers that connected the Atlantic to the Pacific. It was the goal of Lewis and Clarke to find a connecting link between the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean and finally locate the â??Northwest Passageâ??. Once they got to the Pacific they new this legendary route did not exist. However, they did find sources of the Missouri, major tributaries of the Columbia and collected valuable information that opened the path to western expansion.
