To replace the previous 19th century bridge. The John Rennie Bridge originally opened in 1831 had to widened at the beginning of the twentieth century because it could not cope with the volume of modern traffic and the bottle neck was causing congestion in London. However the widening process damaged the foundations and the bridge started sinking an inch every eight years, in the end one end became 4 inches lower than the other. Eventually in 1973 a new bridge was opened the old one having been sold to an American entrepreneur Robert McCulloch who reconstructed it in Arizona as part of a theme park.
