The Marines started out as 20 space marine legions[1]. After the Horus Heresy the Emperor was afraid of it happening again so he made chapters which have 1000 Space Marines each thus no-one can have a massive army and rebel, as Horus did. Now after the heresy, the loyal Space Marine legions were made into smaller chapters, it is said there are about a thousand[2]. From that 1000, 234 are named - discounting destroyed or missing chapters. This leaves around 764 unnamed Chapters.
