One thing i do know is the board was made out of materials such as ivory... The checkers were not colored. And the board was just squares not black and red checkered squares. I hope i helped.

the flag is broken up into four squares. the top left and bottem right corners are a slanted black and yellow checkered pattern and the top right and bottem left corners are broken up into four squares again in a white and red color with a white and red crossin the center. the section of the cross in the red squares are white and the section of the cross in the white squares are red.
Not sure of the origin, but a checkered history (or checkered past) means some good and some bad. Maybe it comes from the black and white colours of a chequer board ?
