There is an abandoned military ghost town in the Cape Cod area. It's in Truro. A friend brought me out there this past summer. It's on Highland Ave, it's about a half mile from the lighthouse (towards Wellfleet). It was an Air Force base closed in 1985 I think. There are barracks and there's an area of about 30 abandoned houses that were intended for the military families. The barracks area has a sign that says "No Tresspassing US Government", but the area for the military families has two signs that say "Pets must be on leash" (which to me means you can explore and I have) and "Stay on trails-tick infested area" (which to me means stay on the paths!) The houses are all boarded up, trees and plants have taken over everywhere> It's very spooky! Some of the houses are open, and I've been in them, but they're all the same design from the '50's and they've all been stripped of their interiors. One house had a few old black leather couches(from the 70's), but that was all the furnishings there were. There are signs that say there are guided tours in the summer. An arts company put up a big tent there last summer and they had plays and movies. It was call Payomet. This ghost town is on the National Seashore. And it's very east to get to. There are even parking spaces near the abandoned Baseball field. There is also an FAA building near there. It looks like a giant golf ball on top of a pedestal and you can see this on the horizon so you will know you are near the old Air Force base. If you are interested in visiting this place you can email me at duneshackjoe@Yahoo.com and I can help make sure you find it correctly. You will love the place!!!! Have fun exploring!
***UPDATE Nov. 13th 2010. This place is off Highland Road. If you are on Route 6 in Truro look for the Highland Road exit. Get on it. (It's not even a mile long) Look for Old Dewline Road. get on it and follow all the way to the end. You'll see the barracks on the left and the housing on the right.

Ghost towns were typically abandoned due to economic changes, such as depletion of resources or shifts in industry. They serve as reminders of past eras and can attract tourists interested in exploring abandoned buildings and the history of the area.
