Ideologically there is the national hero Wilhelm (Guillaume, Gulielmo - sorry, but there are a lot of languages in Switzerland) Tell referencing the times when Switzerland was founded as a defence agreement... as it was occupied a long time... just giving the ambiguous feeling Swiss people have towards their bigger brothers Germany and Austria (which was larger in those times) knowing they are culturally linked but not liked that much nevertheless (who likes the occupants?).

The Swiss general in ww2 (Henri Guisan) has reached some stage of national symbol later on... and overall - due to its history - the army itself is a national symbol.
