In a war the odds are severely stacked against Britain on paper at least Britain is the far outsider. Although the French army was the most powerful army on paper in WW2 and Germany had a rapid Victory.
Reasons this couldn't happen.
These countries would never fight 1 v 1 in any kind of war, Britain would bring its allies with her and so would China. The effects on these countries fighting would force other nations to join in or attempt to defuse the situation.
Nuclear Weapons, Both countries possess Nuclear weapons and Submarine based delivery systems. Britain would almost certainly be wiped out entirely and even with china's vast land space it would be damaged beyond repair and crash the global market.
Even if Britain could win at sea and in the air it has no hope of taking control of china and her enormous population, Britain is struggling with a similar situation in Afghanistan which is many times smaller.
Hypothetically if they came into conflict without Nuclear weapons it would be a Naval war and then one or the other signing a peace treaty Neither could achieve total victory or have enough to gain for the cost of the war.
Britain's Advantages.
It is one of 3 blue water Navies in the world including the USA and France it could hold its own at sea. at least until new Chinese ships were built, even though china has a larger navy it is nowhere near as modern. Its like sending a ship of the line against a WW2 era Battleship. IE - Type 45 Destroyer of the Royal Navy the worlds most advanced Anti Aircraft Destroyer.
Member of NATO and Commonwealth, in a non Nuclear war "The West" could easily defeat China in a Conventional Conflict and would benefit the west as there debts to china would vanish overnight.
In the end Western countries will not fight against opponents like china 1 v 1. Britain would be a even match at sea with the Chinese but could never win on Land.
