Texas was originally part of Mexico. I believe Texas wanted to be its own country. The US claimed Texas after the war between the US and Mexico.

Mexico considered Texas as part of its own territory. All the history between the Republic of Texas and Mexico was fraught with disagreements and conflict. Having Texas as part of the US, however was too much to bear for Mexico. The situation soon became a war between the USA and Mexico.

To summarize, California, Nevada, Utah, Texas and parts of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Wyoming were part of Mexico and now belong to the US.
Mexico and the US do have an extradition agreement, so... it IS possible. BUt remember this, when you cross back over into the US as you most probably will, they can snatch you up at any time.
