Alexander spent about 18 months campaigning through Asia Minor (the equivalent of modern day Turkey). He landed in Asia at Troy, conducted a series of battles (Granicus and Issus) and sieges e.g. Miletus, Halicarnassus, Sagalassos on his way through the landscape that makes up Turkey today. Having won the battle of Issus, near Iskenderun, he marched south entering the equivalent of modern day Syria.
The archaeologist and travel writer, Peter Sommer, describes his 2,000 mile walk retracing Alexander the great's route in Turkey, which also includes a map showing Alexander's journey.
