The Education Code doesn't count days, but weeks; 36. According to where public holidays fall, this adds up to between 175 and 180 days a year.

In comparison, England has 190, Canada 194, Italy and Denmark 200; in the USA it depends on the State, but the average is 180.

There are five fixed holidays and three movable ones related to the date of Easter. The fixed holidays are January 1; Mat 1 (Labour Day), 8 May (VE Day), 14 Julky (Bastille Day), 11 November (Armistice Day) and 15 August (The Assumption - the only fixed religious holiday. The number in any given year will vary, because the fixed holidays may fall on Saturday or Sunday. Employers, in that case, are expected to give their staff another day off close to the time- usually the Friday before or the Monday after. The movable holidays are always on weekdays - Easter Monday, Whit (Pentecost) Monday and Ascension day, which is always a Thursday.

It is worth adding that when a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, many employees will also take the Monday or Friday as part of their annual allocation (usually about 25 days or 5 weeks).
