Cartoonist rely more on their own artistic skill than on schooling to become cartoonists. it all depends how professional a cartoonist you want to become. Depends on the sort of job you want and the level of skill that job requires. Major comic companies like Marvel and DC and Dark Horse are beginning to require art school degrees; for newspaper Cartoons, some general ideas & the ability to draw your characters consistently are all you need. For internet self-published stuff, people have gone everywhere from drawing talking circles and stick figures to full-on photorealistic professional art. If you're significantly talented, many companies will hire you on a trial basis based on your portfolio alone, with no reference to formal schooling; you will probably have to do some studying on your own though, both to improve your skills and learn how to set up an artist's portfolio.
