When Stephen Austin traveled to Mexico in 1833 to negotiate for greater autonomy for Texas, he was initially treated with respect by Mexican authorities, including President Antonio López de Santa Anna. However, his diplomatic efforts were complicated by rising tensions between American settlers and the Mexican government. Although he successfully secured some concessions, his return to Texas coincided with increased unrest, and he was later imprisoned for a time in Mexico for his role in advocating for Texan rights.
