Their mission was to establish an English colony in the New World in the name of King James I which they would later name Virginia. The original settlement was named Roanoke. The name Virginia was chosen to honor Queen Elizabeth I who reigned at the time.

The settlers chose the location site for Jamestown because they were concerned about defended themselves from attack from other ships. They were pleased to dock their own ships and found a good supply of fresh water in Jamestown.
