The charter for the colony of Georgia, granted in 1732, established its boundaries as extending from the Savannah River in the north to the Altamaha River in the south, and from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west. However, the western boundary was later defined more specifically as the Appalachian Mountains. These boundaries were intended to create a buffer between the British colonies and Spanish Florida.
