You should note that when international politics and diplomacy are involved, there are no real friends but different countries with common or diverging interests that more often than not, end up in 'friendly rivalries', contempt or even outright war.

With that in mind, the United States and Mexico have had their share of highs and lows when diplomatic relations are concerned. Major conflicts include the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and several incursions of the US Military into Mexico's territory (1914, 1916-1917) which have resulted in a general suspicion on the American government ever since.

Nowadays, major discrepancies between both countries include illegal Immigration of Mexican nationals into the U.S. and unchecked weapons smuggling from the United States into Mexico's territory, which hinder the Mexican government's efforts against its War on Drugs, fought since 2006.

On the other hand, Mexico and the United States are close business and trade partners with diverging interests that do not collide with each other and in general terms, have a cooperative attitude towards each other.
