Texas could and did secede from the Union with the rest of the Confederate states.

Texas declared its secession from the United States in 1861 to join the Confederate States of America. When the war ended the slaves were freed and Texas, as were the other seceded states, subjected to reconstruction, a process that left a residue of bitterness among whites. Whites were not allowed to vote for a certain time, lost all their possessions and liberties, etc.
