Under Philip II, the Islamic threat was stopped from sacking Rome and likely enslaving much more of Europe.

The leaders of the Protestant revolt, the debt-ridden, indulgent princes and aristocracy, would have sacrificed Europe to Islam, believing it was better to be ruled by them than by the "anti-Christ Pope and his church.

Without Philip II and his severe devotion to what he understood to be defending the Right, world history would have been very different. Europe could easily have been over-run by either Islamics or Protestants and the churches, culture, art and music, as well as the teachings of the Saints and religious thought developed over many centuries would have been erased, as both Islamics and Protestants despised all of it.

Unfortunately, it was not possible to deal with all these threats with only the economic base of Spain, even given the precious metals of New Spain. The usury sapped the people greatly.
