There were more than two mining methods used during the gold rush. Diggers in the gold rush used the following equipment and methods to find gold :
things like flowers and unacotti
sluice box, long tom, pan, rocker, panning, digging, mining, hydraulic mining
Much more gold has been found in recent years than was found in the Gold rush of 1849. Mostly because of modern mining methods not available to the miners in 1849 (such as heap leaching.) I read in a mining magazine that more Gold was found in 1994 than any year in this country's history.
After the gold rush, mining operations in western gold mining towns were often taken over by larger mining companies. These corporations utilized advanced technology and methods, enabling them to extract gold more efficiently from deeper deposits that individual miners could not access. Additionally, many former prospectors became workers for these companies, leading to a shift from small-scale, independent mining to organized, industrial operations.

Actually, the gold rush did not begin until 1851. Methods of extraction included panning, which was the most common method; cradling, which was introduced by Edward Hargarves after he saw the method used in California; puddling; and shaft mining.
