Slovenia has 3 distinct regions: Mountainous/Alpine, continental and Mediteranean. Temperatures in the mountains are cold as in the rest of the European Alps. Temperatures in the continental region (most of the country) have cold winters (often below 0°c) and hot, often very hot summers (often above 30°c). The small Mediteranean region (cities of Koper and Piran) have milder winters (rarely below 0°c) and very slightly cooler summers (sometimes above 30°c). The climate in Slovenia is similar to northern Italy, northern Spain or the south of France with the exception of the mountainous region which is closer to that of Austria and Switzerland
