First off, it's all one word...BluffRat. It's a negative name given to anyone who resides in Flour Bluff, a suburb on the outskirts of the coastal city of Corpus Christi. In the early 60's and 70's Flour Bluff was called the sewer of Corpus Christi and thus anyone living there were the Rats. Since the development of Padre Island, the National Sea Shore, and Naval Air Station Corpus Christi Flour Bluff has grown into one of the nicer, more developed areas of Corpus Christi and the locals there have embraced the once derogatory term.
This has nothing to do with Aviation! Selena Quintanilla was fatally shot on the perimeter of a swimming pool at a motel in Corpus Christi- the name of the town means , literally Body of Christ! Selena either died on the spot or on the way to the hospital. She was gunned down by a jealous co-manager named Yolanda who was later talked into surrendering. Selena was clad only in a peignoir a the time of the tragedy and according to one magazine was chased around the perimeter of the pool by Yolanda before Yolanda opened fire . Murder weapon was a large, police-type revolver. There is a Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi but that has no bearing on the Selena affair.
