In the period of colonial America, seaports and their large cities of great significance developed for several reasons. One factor was the city's port's distance to the Atlantic Ocean. For example, the New York City port led directly to the Atlantic Ocean. Another factor was whether the port city led to an economic zone. Here Philadelphia, New York and Boston ports all led via a river to farmlands or manufacturing sites. The depth of any port was also important. This would allow for larger ships and their deep hulls to use the above mentioned major colonial ports.

Spain and Portugal controlled all trade in their colonies. The colonies were not allowed to trade among themselves or with other nations. They were kept dependent on the mother country. In addition, any effort to develop industry in the colonies was crushed. Latin America had to sell all its raw materials to Spain and Portugal. It had to buy all it's finished products from them, too. This kind of control kept industry from developing in Latin America. Eventually people of Latin America rose up against their foreign rulers.
Geography played a major role in the development of agriculture in the colonies. For instance over in the northern colonies (new england) the soil was harsher and led to the development of diverse agriculture and generally smaller farms. Which allowed urban centers and towns to develop. In the South the soil was richer and allowed the planting of tobacco in large plantations, with large plantations people were spread far apart and did not allow for urbanization
