Well, long story really. Nicknamed, the Battle of Mogadishu(or the Battle of the Black Sea and Black Hawk Down)First, we made a big effort to help the starving in Somalia. BIG MISTAKE. The "civil war" that has been going on over in Somalia was chaotic. The local militants from different tribes or groups would shoot anyone taking the food and they would "steal" the food for themselves. Supposedly there Dictator, Mohamed Farrah Aidid, wanted his people to starve. So, in return, we sent our best Units to get that ONE MAN. Another BIG MISTAKE! We sent the US Army Rangers, US Delta Force, and some squads of the US Navy Seals. We had some intel of where Mohamed Farrah Aidid was but not precise intel. In fact, it was false intel and we captured militants but not Mohamed. During the pursuit to capture him we had 2 Black Hawk Helicopters shot down and we had to send quick reaction teams to help carry out the casualties and wounded. But there progress to get to the Black Hawks would be delayed due to the quick reaction forces and Rangers being pinned down by HEAVY militant small arms fire and RPG(Rocket Propelled Grenade) fire. A "Little Bird" Helicopter carrying two snipers named, Master Sergeant Gary I. Gordan, and Sergeant First Class Randall D. Shughart. These two brave snipers would do the unthinkable and attempt to stall and hold off the militants until the rest of the Rangers and Delta Force could reach them(which would be in 20-30 minutes due to heavy militant small arms and RPG fire) Gordan and Shughart would receive the highest US Military award called, the Medal of Honor. Although both of them were killed in a heroic firefight, they will never be forgotten. In conclusion to the fight, SNA Militia claims ranges from 133 to 315 Somalian(Both militant and civilian) casualties. The US sources claim an estimate of 1,000 to 3,000(Both militant and civilian) were killed in the fight. The US forces had 19 killed and 73 wounded out of the total 160 ground forces they had with 19 aircraft and 12 vehicles(9 humvees) and the Militants had 2,000-4,000 fighters. In 2001 the movie, Black Hawk Down, was made to show what happened those 2 long days of fighting. Which was supposed to be an estimated 3 hour rage to capture Mohamed Farrah Aidid but after the Black Hawk's being shot down all hell broke loose. In the end, neither side really "won" the battle, but after the withdrawl, the african militants claimed victory over the mighty US.

'Somali' is an adjective meaning 'belonging to Somalia'. The country of Somalia is a recognised country, but it is in bad shape financially and politically. Somaliland is a breakaway region of Somalia which calls itself a country, though it is not internationally recognised. It is doing rather better then the rest of Somalia!
