Lebanese people are made up of multiple ethnic groups. Around 69% of Lebanese people in Lebanon and world wide descend from a Phonecian descent. The majority of Lebanese people prefer to be called Phonecian especially the Maronite, Melkite and Assyrian and Syrian Orthodox Christians who make up the majority of Lebanese people worldwide. The now majority Muslim Lebanon who make up around 61% of Lebanon prefer to be called Arab although some prefer Phonecian. The large influx of Muslims and Islamic culture are from the conquering of Arab invaders therefore Lebanon's official language is Arabic. Many Christian Lebanese still speak some Syriac a form of Aramaic the language Jesus spoke and the language of the Phonecians. Most Lebanese Churches still conduct liturgies in Aramaic. Many small sects also thrive in Lebanon such as the Druze which is a Islamic sect claiming secret knowledge and Armenians Apostolic Orthodox Christians. Government is divided depending on your sect a Muslim can get a divorce while a Syrian Orthodox Christians could possibly and a Maronite Catholic would most likely never be allowed. Even the Constitution states that the president of Lebanon must be a Maronite Catholic and the Prime Minister a Sunni Muslim although since the majority of Lebanon is Muslim the government is being more challenge due to the over whelming power of the Christians because the constitution was created when the majority were Christians although after many civil wars the Muslims hold a Majority and the Christians having more money left Lebanon searching for a better life. The Lebanese Christians ancestry is one of the oldest hundreds of years older than the Greeks or Romans and there churches are some of the oldest. Christians in Lebanon are much more conservative and modest than in the west and follow much more rules as well. although most Muslims in Lebanon are very liberal compared to the rest of the world even the US. Lebanon is very diverse although the are very westernized and most commonly referred to as the jewel of the Middle East. Most Lebanese are categorized as Levant Arabs meaning they have more Mediterranean characteristics.
