The only split pot I am aware of in Texas hold em' is when two players hands tie which happens quite often. The rule is that the best five cards count so if the tie occurs within a five card hand such as a straight or a flush the pot is split. Now if the tie occurs in a hand that does not require five cards such as a pair, two pair or three of a kind, then the other hold card comes into play. This card is commonly known as the "Kicker" or the "Fifth Card". The player with the highest card is the winner. Such as a King beats a Queen or a nine beats a five. In this case there is no split pot as you have a declared winner. I have played this game for over five years now and I believe in that time I have seen everything happen that could happen. I play most of my Poker with [www.pureplaypoker.com]. The game is well organized and the other players are extremely friendly. It is easy to make new friends there. This is what make it a great experience. It also costs you no money to play. Its totally free. I have played in Vegas twice and unfortunately the cards were not there on the days I played and I didn't last past 200 players both times.
Split the pot
If neither player has a better hand that what it on the board, then yes the players split the pot evenly. However, if one player has a top card to the straight, then they would win the entire pot. For example the board is 2,3,4,5,6 and one of the players has a 7, the that player would win the entire pot. In addition, if one of the players has a flush, then that player wins the entire pot.

The kicker is used as a tie breaker when two players hold the same hand. e.g. You and I both have a pair of Kings, but you have an Ace with your King and I only have a Jack. Then you win the pot because you have the higher kicker. In Texas Hold Em You count down 5 kickers (because a poker hand only consists of 5 cards) so if we have the same kickers off the board it is a split pot.
