Definitely the food; i recommend Pizza and pasta, especially in the South of Italy. Clothes and shoes are also very good, but quite expensive. You can find nice people but be careful, in some stores they might try to charge you more just because you're a tourist. The most beautiful cities are definitely Rome, Florence and Venice. Also, I think the mountain towns are gorgeous and worth the effort - driving in Italy is a challenge, but it is a great way to see many towns that you would miss travelling by rail. Tuscany, Sienna, San Gimingnano and Greve are all beautiful towns. In Umbria there is Orvietto (there's a beautiful duomo/cathedral there), Spello and Perugia - all of which are nice. Food, wine, countryside, history, and the people who are all very friendly, and if you try to speak Italian, they will try to understand you and communicate with you (except when you are in a big city like Rome where they are very very busy). Amalfi Coast is also spectacular, just south of Naples. Have fun!
