Don't forget to subtract the coastline of Alaska (6640mi.) and Hawaii (750mi.) especially since Alaska's coastline is greater than that of the continental United States!

You'll end up with something near 10,900 miles which reasonably corresponds to the commonly accepted approximation of 10,000 miles for the circumference of the continental United States.
