Before 2002, Italy used the Lire (Lee-ray - but roll the 'r'). However, in 2002, most of Europe decided it would be much more efficient to all use the same currency (except England because they knew it would lower the value of their currency - different story, though), so they converted to the Euro. At the moment (5:55 PM Eastern Time, on the 18th of June, 2010), the Euro sits roughly at $0.79 Canadian, and $0.84 US.
