If you drive from Winnipeg to Toronto, just follow the Trans-Canada Highway East, past Thunder Bay to Nipigon. At Nipigon you have two choices: the Lake Superior Route (Highway 17) or the Northern Ontario Route (Highway 11). The Lake Superior Route is shorter, but only by about 60 kilometers. It has two drawbacks: several very long and very steep hills, and fierce unpredictable winter storms coming in off Lake Superior. The Highway 11 route is much more level, and there's more 'civilization' along Highway 11 than along Highway 17. Highway 17 does have some very spectacular scenery. Take Highway 17 to Sudbury, then 69, to Parry Sound, then 400 to Toronto, or take Highway 11 to Barrie, then 400 to Toronto. Othwise, just fly.
Go to Union Station and inquire about The Canadian route. That is the only passenger train service that runs through Edmonton from Toronto.
