Hindi-Urdu is the major language in South Asia. though a myriad languages are spoken in the sub-continent, hindustani or Hindi-urdu is the widely understood language. Urdu and Hindi are two standardized registers of the same language. while urdu is written in the Persian script and draws technical and literary vocabulary from Persian and Arabic, Hindi uses literary and technical vocabulary from sanskrit. at the spoken level both the languages sound same.
