The basic story is that the Puritans, a Protestant religious sect, came from England seeking freedom of worship. They settled in Boston in 1690, determined to make it an example of Christian piety, as well as a successful place to live. While the Puritans were probably well-intentioned (they definitely believed in hard work and getting an education), they were very rigid about their beliefs, and a number of people, including Roger Williams, felt they had to leave. (Roger Williams went on to found the state of Rhode Island.) Gradually, other religious groups arrived, and the control of the Puritans was loosened. Boston became a city officially in 1822.
