The Brits wanted oil. Also, they were competing against other European countries for occupation of Africa. Europeans saw Africa as a "Gold Mine," especially economically. Africa had diamonds, gold, silver, herbs, and slaves to be bought. A country with control of Africa would greatly increase their power just before WWI.

Slave trade was part of the reason they were there originally... yes, it was out of the question in 1901.. but they may have not jumped on Nigeria had it not been for slaves prior to 1901 and we may be talking about why the French colonized Nigeria.
