The first major event of the Morant Bay rebellion was a fight between the local police and the black spectators of a heated trial of a black man who was accused of trespassing an abandoned plantation that broke out on October 7, 1865. Arrests were issued, most notably that of Baptist preacher Paul Bogle. On October 11, Randall Brown arrived at the Morant Bay court house with protestors, who then proceeded to throw rocks and sticks at the volunteer militia stationed there. The militia killed seven of the black protestors in retaliation. Governor John Eyre then sent government troops to hunt down the rebels and bring Paul Bogle to trial. The Morant Bay rebellion proved to be the kindle to a very heated and fierce debate in Britain. Shortly after, Jamaica was turned into a Crown Colony.
