Puerto Rico is not independent. It is a US Territory. Puerto Rico has not been independent since the Spanish landed on the island in 1493. It was a possession of the Spanish Crown until 1898. In early 1898 Puerto Rico gained some local autonomy. However later the same year, the US occupied Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War. Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the United States at the end of the war and it has been a territory of the US since. It is currently considered a Commonwealth and a Free Associated State, but that is a fancy name for a semi-autonimous territory.
In the year 1943 Puerto Rico was discovered. In other words, the only influential man in Puerto Rico that we know of is Christopher Columbus, that is if we exclude the natives for which we have no record.
