The only years when the Times Square celebration did not include a ball drop was 1942 and 1943, the height of World War II. This was in compliance with the national night time lighting restrictions. In place of the illuminated ball, there was a midnight moment of silence and the sounding of chimes.
You're ball is also dropping.
The New Year's Eve ball descended down the flagpole at One Times Square for the first time on December 31, 1907. New Year's 2008 marks the 100th anniversary of the New Year's Eve ball dropping. The only years since 1907 when the ball was not dropped were 1942 and 1943 (due to the suspension of lighting throughout the city because of the war).
I have seen it listed at well over a ton (total weight) of confetti is dropped on New Year;s Eve on Times square.
One annual tradition in the USA is the dropping of the New Year ball in Times Square, which first took place in 1907. Fireworks and parties are also a major part of the celebrations.
Full House was cancelled in 1995.
Starting this year, the ball will remain in the same place where it is seen on New Years' Eve, so that it may be seen by tourists.
