God, Gold, and Glory
God (religion): Roman Catholic priests traveled to the America, Asia, & Africa in order to convert the natives to Christianity. They were missionaries. In addition to Christian teaching, the missionaries also provided hospitals and school for many natives.
Gold (natural resources): Explorers traveled to the Americas, Asia, & Africa in search of gold, silver, and other Natural Resources. They were after the wealth of these areas. (A side note is that as they exploited the mines and the rich soil of Latin America & the Caribbean they used first Native American and then African slave labor in order to meet their human capital needs for workers).
Glory: Some explorers traveled through a sheer sense of imperialism. They went to see what was there and for bragging rights. They also went exploring for new lands to have larger empires which would bring them glory and prestige.
