Fascism took power in Italy in 1922 when Benito Mussolini and his National Fascist Party orchestrated the March on Rome. Following this demonstration of strength, King Victor Emmanuel III appointed Mussolini as Prime Minister on October 29, 1922. This marked the beginning of a totalitarian regime that would last until the end of World War II in 1945.
