Suicide attacks are a common feature in Japanese history. Since surrender was considered disgraceful and sometimes retreat was not an option, Japanese soldiers facing defeat would either simply kill themselves or make suicidal attacks against the enemy.
(this is known in western literature as the Banzai Charge)

During the battle of Pearl Harbour First Lieutenant Fusata Iida deliberately crashed his badly damged plane into Kanehe Air Station making him the first person to make a suicide attack with an airplane. During the course of the war other Japanese pilots would follow this example.

In 1944, as it became increasingly apparent that Japan was losing the war, the Japanese began forming deliberate suicide units called Tokubetsu kōgeki tai (special attack units) to perform air attacks on Allied ships. They soon became informally known as Kamikaze(Divine Wind)

The first Kamikaze unit began operations in October, 1944. The first ship to be hit was HMAS "Australia" which was seriously damaged on October 21. On October 24, the USS Sonoma was hit and sunk. On October 25, the USS Kitkun Bay was hit and damaged; and the aircraft carrier USS St. Lo was hit and sunk. By the end of October the Kamikazes had hit 47 ships; sinking 5 of them.

What caused the kamikaze to happen?

The kamikaze, or "divine wind," phenomenon during World War II was primarily driven by Japan's desperate military situation as the war progressed. Faced with mounting losses and dwindling resources, Japanese military leaders resorted to using suicide attacks by pilots who would crash their planes into Allied ships. This tactic was rooted in the cultural values of honor and sacrifice, as pilots viewed their missions as a noble duty to protect their homeland. The kamikaze attacks were emblematic of Japan's willingness to fight to the last man in defense of the nation.

How close was Japan to defeat when the war in Europe ended in World War 2?

Very. Their Navy, their best weapon, was out of commision and they had resorted to using Kamikaze (ka-mee-ka-zay) fighters. If they had been in a good position to keep fighting, they would not have deployed Kamikaze, a last gasp sort of weapon.

What was the Japanese strategy called in which fighter pilots deliberately crashed their planes into enemy ships?

The suicide pilots were known as the kamikaze (Japanese for divine wind). Many of these pilots had no training in using bombs or torpedoes, as armaments and capable combat pilots were in short supply. It was comparatively easier to dive into ships with a plane having only one large explosive.

Can you kill corvus with the move kamikaze on dragon quest 9?

Yes, you can use the move Kamikaze to defeat Corvus in Dragon Quest IX. Kamikaze inflicts damage to all enemies at the cost of the user's life, and since Corvus is a formidable foe, this move can be effective in a pinch. However, using Kamikaze means sacrificing the character, so it's best used strategically. Just ensure your party can handle the remainder of the battle after the sacrifice.

Their suicidal efforts convinced the US that the Japanese did not feel beaten and were not ready to surrender

What alternative did the US have to making a full-scale invasion if Japan or to using atomic bombs there?

Using chemical weapons (which were being stockpiled already for use in the invasion). Using biological weapons (not really available at the time), Walking away and letting Japan take back the pacific and asia.
