The real Anastasia went to the forest to be put in a hole in the ground with the rest of her family. However, if you're asking about the legend of Anastasia, that's different. A German woman named Anna Anderson claimed to be Anastasia and told a different story. She pretended to be dead and a sympathetic Bolshevik helped her escape. She made her way west, passing through the Ukraine and Romania before slowly making her way to Germany after the Great War had officially ended. She attempted to kill herself and was placed in a mental institute in Berlin. She refused to reveal her name and was referred to as "Miss Unknown". Another patient believed she was Tatiana and spread the word after she was released. Some people believed the woman until a lady in waiting to the empress named Sophie Von Buxhoeveden. She sneered at Anderson and said she was too short to be Tatiana who was the tallest sister. Anderson replied by stating that she never said she was Tatiana. She then claims to be Anastasia and Sophie had her perform a number of tests, but she failed to recognize faces or items that the real Anastasia would have known quite well. Sophie declared her a fraud, and the Romanovs ceased to trust her. However, Anderson did not want the Romanov money, but rather she truly believed herself to be a Romanov. Ultimately, Anderson made her way to American. She lived for a time in New York City and eventually settled down in Virginia. There Anderson passed away somewhere in the 1980's.
