The flag of Ghana replaced the flag of the United Kingdom when independence was gained in 1957. It has red, yellow, and green (Pan-African colors) in horizontal stripes, with a black star in the center. The red represents the blood of the deaths of the independence struggle. The yellow signifies the wealth in minerals of the country. The green represents Ghana's rich forests and natural wealth. The star is a representation of the lodestar of African freedom.
