That's television for ya! (They almost always get it wrong). There was only one "US" tank battle, at Ben Het in the Central Highlands in '68 or '69. And that fight was between NVA LIGHT TANKS against US Army MEDIUM gun tanks (Pattons).
And...if the Television people had done their homework they would find that that wasn't the first US tank engagent. A US Marine Corps M48 Patton engaged an NVA PT76 (the same light tank used at Ben Het) at a river near the DMZ before Ben Het. The Marine tanker fired three 90mm shells at it, hitting it on the 3rd round. Unfortunately some F4 Phantoms returning from the North had not expended their ordnance and dropped their bombs on the hit NVA tank, knocking it out for good. The pilots also claimed credit for the kill. Author Dunstan is the reference for this battle.
Continuing...if the TV people had been more accurate with their WORDING they would find that that were MANY tanks battles in Vietnam...the first tank to tank fight between NVA armor and ARVN tanks was during the last major offensive of the US Army; Operation Lam Son 719 (1971)...ARVN M41 Walker Bulldogs vs NVA PT76 & T54s. Vietnam was also the first usage of the vaunted SAGGER & TOW anti-tank missiles in 1972 in the Central Highlands. Mounted Combat in Vietnam by General Starry, US Department of the Army is the reference for this material.

The M551 Sheridan was mostly constructed of aluminum, with the turret and 152mm main gun being built of steel. It was the US Army's only amphibious tank (although advertised as an "Airborne" tank) and utilized a V-6 diesel engine. All, minus the tank companies within the 11th ACR in Vietnam, US Armored Cavalry Squadrons in the Vietnam War were equipped with the Sheridan light tank (officially designated as the Armored Airborne Reconnaissance Assault Vehicle during the Vietnam War).
