Connecticut was settled by a group of Puritan colonists from Massachusetts, led by Thomas Hooker, in the early 1630s. They sought greater religious and political freedom, as well as fertile land for farming. The settlers established the Fundamental Orders of 1638-1639, which created a framework for self-governance, marking an important development in the evolution of democratic governance in America.
