In Scotland the new year celebrations are called "Hogmanay" and last several days. One Hogmanay tradition is called "First footing", being the first to enter someones house.
It is considered very good luck if a tall dark haired man is the first to enter your house in the new year, having a woman enter first is considered to be quite unlucky and worse so if she is blonde.
It is also a custom to bring a lump of coal and some drink for your host (whiskey works best) and to have money in your possession. In modern days however nobody really brings coal since there are very few coal fires these days.
